Boosted by a very encouraging code of investment, the hotels sector created at the end of the seventies (1979), in the region of “Port EL Kantaoui”, out passed the stage of 14343 beds in 1997, that is 43 % of the total number of beds in the governorate of Sousse which counts 33511 beds and 9 % of the total number of beds in Tunisia (156.000). In 18 years of investment in tourism sector, the number of hotel units reached 32 units, a big part of which are of high standing, that is 34 % of the total number of the units in the governorate which counts 94 units. In the region of Hammam-Sousse 5 hotels of the category 5 stars, 8 hotels of the category 4 stars, 8 hotels of the category 3 stars, l unit of 2 stars, 3 holiday villages, 7 hotel-apartments 8 travel agencies and 6 restaurants of 3 forks. If the region of Port El-Kantaoui, with its 7 kilometres of fine sandy beaches, has been able to impose itself as one of the best holiday destination in the Mediterranean, it is oriented today towards a diversified tourism, by offering opportunities of varied activities and discoveries targeting business tourism, the infrastructure of the region can receive business travellers, the category 5 stars counts 5 hotels with 2714 beds that is 18 % of the total number in the region of Port El-Kantaoui and 71 % of the total number of beds of the category 5 stars in the governorate. By combining entertainment and business and by promoting the real values of the Tunisian tourism, sea sun and sand, in the purpose of improving the incomes from the "blue gold". Tunisia had to reinforce its natural assets by offering other products, like sports, and particularly pleasure, Golf and Tennis are well spread in the region of Port El-Kantaoui, discotheques, skin-diving cities and equitation, the 17 bases of nautical sport, the 16 cities of tennis, and 36 swimming pools and indoor pools. Hammam-Sousse has the record of the largest swimming pool in Tunisia 2000 m2, all these are well equipped to host clients looking for active and sport holiday, in a friendly or family atmosphere and a rest in a very pleasant weather in luxury and comfort. Finally to preserve the natural assets of Tunisian tourism (sea, sun and sand), fitting out improvement works have been achieved in the region of Hammam-Sousse, the authorities had to start with the renovation and the building of roads, the pavements and the small streets. To sensitise tourists to the visit of the town and to improve the environment, some projects have been elaborated to embellish the main entrances of the town, while preserving the arab-moslem architecture of the buildings and by linking with short ways the town of Hammam-Sousse to the city of Port El-Kantaoui without forgetting the creation of parks. The drainage system covers almost all the town of Hammam-Sousse and Port El-Kantaoui, with a development project concerning the cleanness of the town and its beaches with the acquisition of modern equipment. It is not by chance that Hammam-Sousse received the prize of the President of the Republic for cleanness in 1991,
Port El-Kantaoui: In order to diversify the Tunisian tourism product, and in order to develop the opportunities of entertainment and to climb up close to the important traditional tourist destinations in the Mediterranean basin, like France and Spain, Tunisia has invested in the equipment of Port El-Kantaoui – “Golf-Course”, a golf course of 27 by 108 constructed as far back as 1979, spread over 103 hectares, conceived to host professional and amateur golfers, with the possibility to organise tournaments, very pleasant to practise golf and to walk round among the olive trees, a very high level course starting at the top of hill and ends edging the sea after crossing an olive tree field. |
