The town and its history

A town that breathes culture

If time can have memories of recent times, then it is sure that the visitor will discover the joy of life in this small theatre in Tunisia ; the cultural activities, the festivals and the light that have been existing for a long time.

Since the fifties, foundouk Hamed Djegham has hosted the Tunisian singer Safia Chamia and Safoua too. when visiting H.Sousse stars from the world of theatre confessed their enthusiasm and their happiness to find so nice and welcoming spectators among the Tunisian people.

It is not uphazardly that Hammam-Sousse breathes the culture. The movement of artistic creation has existed from the forties. Since 1958 “the young theatre band” was a source of popular plays, presented in the space of a Marabout or an oil mill, which became the stages of unforgettable plays "Ah, my father and my mother - in law", featuring the father actor “Youssef Laatiri”, this was the first theatrical manifestation.

From the old “Ahmed Dahmane” to “Hafedh Djedidi” (with his scripts that leave no one indifferent to them especially with the breath of the vulnerable or the cemetery),

men who have produced untreated themes which stimulated the literary efforts of professor “Fredj Lahouar” and his contribution to the Tunisian novel.

The painting of “Salem Bourkhis”, the wall painting of “Ridha Dahmane”, the exhibitions of “Mahfoudh Selmi” and “Zouhour Zardi”, witness of the soundness of the artistic activity in this shy town, which speaks of itself only through the magazines,

the “information bulletins” distributed by the associations from the sixties, “Sada El Hammam”, “El Akhlak”… “Majaletes”… which main purpose is to enrich the associative life and the stimulation of all creative initiative.

The lights of the “festivals” have never ceased to lighten the evenings of the town, of the stars, of the seven arts have visited Hammam-Sousse during the sessions of the spring festival (end of March), the sessions of El Kantaoui festival (July, August), the child festival (June), finally the Medina festival every Ramadhan.

Hammam-Sousse has three youth and culture centres, three libraries, 49 associations of which 17 are political, 14 associations for youth, culture and the environment 6 associations for sports activities (including more than ten branches, football, handball, tennis, ping pong, boxing, karate…) 10 social and economic associations and 2 associations to help the handicapped.

We should not forget to speak about the prosperity of cultural commerce with 19 book shops, more than 10 video clubs, 20 artists decorators, calligraphers, and 7 music bands…

Finally this infrastructure devoted to the cultural activity, this important number of associations explains the fact that :

culture is no more an activity but a cult.
